this one is going to be a little longer for such an amazing designer!
-born in Venezuela in 1939, it wasn’t until 41 years later that she opened her own company.
-she first married at 18 and had two children with an affluent Venezuelan man. ending in divorce a decade later, she was the first in her family to do so.
-after her failed marriage, she began work as a publicist for Emilio Pucci…her first real job. (must be nice at your first go-round to work for an Italian power-house…right?)
-she re-married in 1968 to Reinaldo Herrera and began a very lavish lifestyle: jet-setting, ran in circles with Princess Margaret and Andy Warhol, and continually appearing on “internationally best dressed” lists.
-her husband moved the family to NYC when carolina was 40.
-after only holding just one job in the industry with Emilio Pucci, some industry tycoons convinced her to start her own line.
-what really jump-started her career was the designing of Caroline Kennedy’s wedding dress in 1986.
-a quote that describes the last statement: “In a world in which wearing borrowed haute couture on the red carpet signifies great style and erecting an East Hampton faux chateau verifies taste, Herrera is unassailable proof that class and poise depend less on what you have on—or what you move into—than on how you behave.” ( Hal Ruben-stein in a 2003 In Style profile)–it’s amazing how true this statement still holds today about hollywood and the rich and famous.
-i’ve been to 1 of her 4 stores in the world, and needless to say, it is exquisite. the stores, just like her designs, feel like you have stepped into another time of ultra-feminine class. when i was wedding dress shopping, i tried on one of her gowns–it is something i’ll never forget because of the unbelievable fabric and craftsmanship.
*fun fact-she was the first designer to use shoulder pads in the 80’s
